Abstract
The consumption of shellfish by coastal populations had a negative image, as if eating these animals from the sea was only a necessity for the survival of starving men and women. Such descriptions, made by people from the mainland landing on the Breton islands, were still relevant in the middle of the 20th century. Thus, shellfish were long neglected by archaeologists. In recent years, the spotlight has shone on these shells and carapaces found on prehistoric hunter-gatherer sites with a new look. Indeed, the diversity of nutrients provided by these marine foods could have contributed to the development of the human brain. Similarly, the daily accessibility of these foreshore animals could have helped the hunter-gatherers to establish their settlements over several seasons at the same place. This close relationship between human populations and the ocean is also visible in the thousands of shells used to decorate themselves.
